Catalonia to vote for independence from Spain

Catalonia, a north-eastern region in Spain, on Friday announced that it would hold a referendum on October 1 to make the decision on splitting from Spain. However, the central government in Madrid has called the vote 'illegal'. An independent poll shows that 44.3% Catalans back a split from Spain, while 48.5% wants to remain with Spain.
